The Beginning
When Baron James de Rothschild purchased Chateau Lafite in 1868, its wine was already storied. Over the years (which soon became decades, and then centuries) that followed, his children, and their children in turn, have stewarded the Chateau through both turbulence and accomplishment.
The Expansion
Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite) always seeks to discover terroir with distinctive identities, and great potential. In every vineyard and every chai, we extend the same spirit of hard work performed hand in hand with nature. And with one common ambition: to give full expression to the true character of our wines.
Today
Part of the sixth generation to carry this tradition forward, Saskia de Rothschild brings our longstanding commitment to sustainability to the fore. Together, we’re placing the future of our vineyards, and the land that sustains them, in the hands of today.
In 2008, the Group decided to start the same story in China. They found the Qiu Shan Valley, nestled not far from the Yellow Sea, next to the Mulangou village: land and people with whom the family could share this journey, trying to learn from this new terroir, as disciples of nature. Domaine de Long Dai was born from this union: France and China, terroir and a village, man and nature.
Today, Long Dai is the iconic flagship wine of the Domaine, boasting great ageing potential and rave reviews. This special claret exemplifies the fusion of East and West, demonstrating how one of the world’s top producers expresses the potential of an emerging wine region in China. It represents a bridge of savoir-faire and culture between France and China. It is the realisation of French winemaking expertise in Chinese terroir, achieved through the joint efforts of French and Chinese teams working hand in hand.
